Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Review | Leaks and Specifications
The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series is a few months away, but we’ve already started to see some solid leaks and rumors. Now, a lot of these early leaks do come from founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, Ross Young, and these leaks have also been verified by the serial leaker, Ice universe, which gives them that much more weight.
So, firstly, it looks like we’re going to have two Samsung Galaxy Note 20s, a Note 20, as well as a Note 20+, but no Note 20 Ultra, as we had with the S20 series. Now, based on sale figures the S20 Ultra did not sell as well as Samsung had hoped, so this may be one of the reasons why we’re not going to be seeing a Note 20 Ultra. But Ross Young has said that the Ultra will be the Galaxy Fold 2, which we’ll talk about in a separate article.
Design of samsung
So the Note 20 and Note 20+, what are they going to look like? Well, from the front, they’re going to look very similar to what we’ve seen from Samsung before. So boxed off designs with smaller bezels and a center punch out. Now, the center punches out is something that I personally don’t mind. It actually allows me to get a little bit creative with wallpapers. But, unfortunately, we’re not going to be seeing any under-display camera tech, this year. Now, because of the smaller bezels, we are going to be seeing slightly larger displays.
Features
the Note 20+ is going to go up from 6.8 inches to around 6.87 inches. And the Note 20 is going to go up from around 6.3 inches to 6.42 inches. Quad HD+ resolution for the Note 20+ and Full HD+ resolution for the Note 20, and, of course, a 120-hertz refresh rate for both. The most interesting thing, however, is that both displays are likely to have LTPO technology.
So LTPO stands for low-temperature polysilicon oxide and, not to go to technical, but, essentially, this is much more power-efficient and it’s great for variable refresh rates. So, when you are not watching any fast-moving content on your screen, maybe you’ve got static content on, then it’s not going to need to use 120 hertz for a refresh rate and it can go all the way down. And, from what Russ Young is saying, you should be getting around 15 to 20% better power efficiency with this technology. Now what this may also mean, it’s just me speculating, is that the Note 20+ may have quad HD+ at 120 hertz. As we know, at this point in time, the S20 series.
if you do want 120 hertz, then this does go down to full HD+ resolution, not quad HD+, and this may have been a reason around battery life. We’re not sure exactly why Samsung had done this. But if we do have the LTPO technology then Samsung may no longer have to limit the resolution when you are using 120hertz on the Note 20+.So this will be quite interesting.
Special Display
Now another very interesting thing about the displays of the Note 20s is that they are likely to have the 3D Sonic Max in-display fingerprint scanner technology from Qualcomm. Now, this is much improved to the ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanners that we’ve got on the S10, the Note 10, as well as the S20 series. The area is 17 times larger, so this would make it the largest area on any smartphone. It’s going to make things a lot more reliable, you’re not going to have to get the specific target.
But things will also be faster as well as more secure, and that’s because the3D Sonic Max does allow two fingers to be used simultaneously. So, for instance, if there are certain apps, such as banking apps, where you do need that extra security you could potentially assign two fingerprints to those apps and this will make things a lot more secure .
Processor
So what’s going to be powering the Note 20 series? Well, it’s likely that we are going to be having the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, as well as an Exynos variant for other markets. Unfortunately, this is something that we’ve talked about a lot before, but it looks like Samsung will have to stick to this. At least for the Note, maybe we’ll see a change in the future. I don’t know, I’m hopeful. Now, I am speculating, but it might be that we are going to see an improved version of the Exynos 990 so that it matches up a little bit more with the 865. Last year, on the S10 we did have the Exynos 9820, but then when you did go over onto the Note we did have the Exynos 9825, which was a little bit improved. So it’s likely that we might see something similar this year.
Specifications
Another piece of information that we do have from RossYoung is that the Note series is going to come with a base of 16 gigabytes of RAM.which is going to be absolutely awesome. The Note series always is known for its multitasking abilities, so this would make some sense.
Whether or not these devices are going to have expandable storage is still a bit of a question mark. On the Note 10, we did not have expandable storage, but on the Note 10+, we did have. So this may be a similar case here for the Note 20 series. Now, of course, there going to be the S Pen, this is something that makes the Note series unique. It’s going to come with some improved features.
Last year we did have some of those Air commands, which honestly speaking, on my Note, I haven’t really used after the first time. The only thing I’ve ever used it for is a remote trigger. We might be seeing some new features here, we’ll see.
Now for the batteries, Ross Young has said that we’re likely to see between a 4,000 to 5,000 milliamp power (mah) battery of Note20s. The Note 20+, of course, will have a larger battery compared to that of the Note 20. What’s interesting is that if we do have the LTPO display technology then this should make things a lot more power-efficient, so we should be getting better battery life on the Note 20 series.
Consumers expectations
Now in terms of the design and the camera, these are things that we’ve not heard about too much as yet. Of course, we can expect a metal and glass sandwich, like we’ve seen from Samsung before, with IP68 water and dust resistance. The camera module, right now Samsung is going for a rectangular camera module, so this is something that I guess we can also expect. This is just me speculating, however. And in terms of the camera tech, it is likely that we would see the 108-megapixel camera sensor that we’ve seen on the S20 Ultra.Whether or not we’re going to have the zoom is still a bit of a question mark. but hopefully, something will be improving a lot of the issues that we’ve faced on the S20 Ultra, such as the autofocus.
Conclusion
